Joshua Morgan’s Grave

Distance from Mill House:
45 minutes

In 1893, surveyor Joshua Morgan (aged 35) fell ill while working in the Tāngarākau Gorge. Although his chainmen walked 50 km to seek medical help, it arrived too late. He was buried on the banks of the river. In 1953, his wife Anne’s ashes were placed beside him, and in 2022 a new headstone was commissioned to commemorate both of them.
