The Forgotten Wold Highway
One of New Zealand’s most scenic and oldest heritage trails, SH 43 stretches for 155 km across multiple districts. Along the way, you’ll encounter fascinating historical sites and stunning natural landscapes.

Whangamomona Hotel
Distance from Mill House:
15–20 minutes
First built in 1902 (and rebuilt in 1912 after a fire), this heritage hotel is rich in history and provides hearty country hospitality. It also serves as the head office for the Republic of Whangamomona, where you can purchase a special-issue passport and perhaps even meet the President over a beverage.
Special Considerations: Reduced hours during winter months.

Joshua Morgan’s Grave
Distance from Mill House:
45 minutes
In 1893, surveyor Joshua Morgan (aged 35) fell ill while working in the Tāngarākau Gorge. Although his chainmen walked 50 km to seek medical help, it arrived too late. He was buried on the banks of the river. In 1953, his wife Anne’s ashes were placed beside him, and in 2022 a new headstone was commissioned to commemorate both of them.

Stratford - The Heart of Taranaki
Often described as the gateway to all things Taranaki, Stratford offers endless adventure, historical sites, and theatrical experiences. It’s also the closest stop for groceries, fuel, and other amenities.

Involves a 25-minute farm track and a 20-minute bush walk with moderate inclines. Two tunnels (12 m and 300 m in length) were built in 1924 to access native timber. This route highlights the McCluggage Memorial Wetland, established in 1984 and now recognized for its regional ecological significance.

Track can be wet; wear sturdy footwear.
Closed 1 August–30 November for lambing.
